February Feeling of the Month / Grounded

February 28, 2025

This series is about interpreting abstract ideas through the senses—with the hope of demystifying the process of making abstract art by sharing about the ideas that inspire it. Explore the full series here.

This month’s feeling is inspired by a deep clarity and inner knowing—in other words, feeling grounded.

When I think of the word “grounded,” I think of being deeply rooted. It’s a word that exudes quiet confidence—a strength in knowing who you are.

Visually, “groundedness” makes me think of:

  • Deep, piney greens

  • Warm, earthy umbers

  • Mid-century design with strong lines and warming wood tones

  • Blankets of evergreens

  • Strong, natural figures

  • Grounding landscapes

  • Quiet, comfortable, and laid-back fashion

In art, it’s been a few years since I’ve made what I would consider “grounded” paintings, but it’s a concept I’m yearning to return to. A few of my grounded paintings—some still available to collect—are included below.

Looks like: See my Pinterest board

Sounds like: Wind rustling through tree leaves

Smells like: Fresh cut grass, salty coastal air

Feels like: Dirt in your hands, mountain air, cold rushing streams, autumn

What feels “grounded” to you?
